Spain gears up for the December holiday break, known locally as the ‘puente de diciembre’. A new study reveals where Spaniards are planning to escape during the festive three-day holiday. Despite the shorter break this year, many are eager to make the most of it, splitting their time between iconic European capitals and Spain’s cherished cities.
According to GuruWalk, a platform offering guided walking tours, Spaniards favour culture-packed European capitals as their top travel choices. Amsterdam, Rome, and London lead the list with their historic landmarks and rich cultural offerings. Meanwhile, Spanish travellers are also exploring within their borders, with Madrid, Toledo, and Granada being popular.
Shorter holiday, big travel plans
This year’s ‘puente de diciembre’ offers just three days of rest, with only a few regions extending the break by moving the holiday. Nevertheless, Spaniards are making the most of it. GuruWalk’s survey found that 95% of holidaymakers are opting for culturally significant destinations, with most choosing Europe. Amsterdam topped the list, followed by Rome and London, highlighting Spaniards’ love for heritage and immersive experiences.
Spain holds strong in travel preferences
While Europe remains a favourite, Spain itself is not overlooked. Around 25% of travellers chose domestic destinations this December. Madrid, the capital, leads with 2.5% of bookings. travellers like its mix of history, museums, and festive atmosphere. Toledo and Granada are also popular for their rich historical and cultural offerings.
Other notable Spanish cities attracting tourists include Zaragoza, Barcelona, and Córdoba, all renowned for their unique architecture and culinary delights. Málaga, Pamplona, and San Sebastián also feature prominently, reflecting Spaniards’ desire to explore their own country.
Italian and French appeal
Beyond Spain and northern European capitals, Italy is a strong contender for Spaniards planning an international escape. Milan, Venice, and Rome are popular, while Bordeaux in France also attracts those seeking a quintessentially French experience. In total, 95% of reservations during this break are concentrated in Europe, with limited interest in Africa, Asia, and the Americas.
Top destinations
The top ten international cities for Spaniards this December are dominated by European capitals: Amsterdam, Rome, London, Milan, Budapest, Krakow, Bordeaux, Venice, Prague, and Berlin. Each offers a blend of history, culture, and holiday charm.
On home soil, Madrid, Toledo, and Granada top the list, followed by Zaragoza, Barcelona, Córdoba, Málaga, Pamplona, San Sebastián, and Seville. Each destination boasts unique attractions, from stunning cathedrals to picturesque streets, promising festive warmth and charm.
