A 20-year-old British tourist who died after falling from a balcony in Tenerife suffered a tragic accident, an inquest has heard.
Harrison Hanley, from Liverpool, died on 25 April while staying at the Parque Santiago 2 apartment complex in Playa de las Americas. The inquest in Liverpool confirmed that his death was caused by traumatic shock following the fall.
A young life lost on holiday
Harrison was a swimming instructor from West Derby and had been on holiday in Tenerife with friends.
He fell from an internal balcony at the apartment complex. Emergency services were unable to save him.
The inquest ruled the death accidental, with no suggestion of third-party involvement.
Tributes from family, friends and schools
Following his death, friends and former schools paid tribute to Harrison, describing him as warm, funny and full of energy.
He was remembered as a talented sportsman and a much-loved young man with a large circle of friends.
A fundraising page set up to support his family reportedly raised more than £40,000.
Tenerife remains a major destination for young British visitors
Tenerife, especially Playa de las Americas, remains one of Spain’s most popular destinations for young British tourists.
Most holidays pass without serious incident. Yet falls from balconies, stairwells and high places continue to be among the most serious accidents affecting visitors in Spanish resorts.
Authorities and travel safety organisations often urge holidaymakers to take extra care around balconies, especially late at night or after drinking.
A reminder without blame
Harrison’s death has been treated as a tragic accident.
For his family and friends, the inquest brings formal clarity, but not relief from the loss of a young man remembered for his personality, kindness and energy.
For other families travelling to Spain this summer, the case is also a painful reminder of how quickly a holiday can change.
