Victims named by authorities

The family has been identified as Agustín Escobar, a senior executive at Siemens, his wife, Merce Camprubi Montal, and their children, aged four, five, and eleven. Escobar was head of Siemens’ rail mobility division since December 2024. The 36-year-old pilot also died in the crash. Police sources confirmed their identities.

Timeline of the crash

The Bell 206 helicopter was in the air for approximately 16 minutes before the crash. It flew over the Statue of Liberty and was heading toward the George Washington Bridge when it went down. Two of the victims were taken to hospital but later died. The others were pronounced dead at the scene.

Response from Spanish government

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Consulate General in New York and the Directorate General of Consular Affairs are coordinating assistance for the victims’ relatives. Efforts are underway to support the grieving families during this crisis.

Statement from Prime Minister Sánchez

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez responded to the tragedy with a message on X, formerly Twitter:
“The news reaching us today of the helicopter crash in the Hudson River is devastating. Five Spaniards from the same family, three of them children, and the pilot have lost their lives. An unimaginable tragedy. I share in the grief of the victims’ loved ones at this heartbreaking time.”

Other reactions and ongoing investigation

US President Donald Trump also commented on the accident, describing it as “terrible” and offering condolences to the families involved. Trump posted the following on X, “Terrible helicopter crash in the Hudson River. Looks like six people, the pilot, two adults, and three children, are no longer with us. The footage of the accident is horrendous. God bless the families and friends of the victims…”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is leading the investigation into the crash. Officials are examining possible technical faults and weather-related factors. A report is expected in the coming days.
