Spanish charging firm Zunder has opened the largest ultra-fast charging station in the country. Located in Asturias, the new hub features 36 charging points and sits at a crucial intersection of key east-west and north-south routes.

This development marks a significant boost for Spain’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure.

Zunder: Leading the charge for ultra-fast EV solutions

Zunder, a major Spanish electric vehicle charging operator, is focused on expanding ultra-fast charging options across the country. The company aims to make electric mobility easier with high-power charging stations placed along busy roads. Zunder’s use of advanced technologies, like Plug & Charge, and flexible payment methods positions it as a key player in Spain’s push for a more robust EV infrastructure.

Strategic location in Asturias

The new charging station is located near the Parque Principado shopping centre in Siero, Asturias, close to the A-66 (Ruta de la Plata) and the A-8. This location is strategic, serving one of Spain’s busiest routes, with over 45,000 vehicles passing daily, according to a 2022 study. Positioned to serve both north-south and east-west traffic, the station strengthens long-distance routes such as Gijón-Sevilla and France-Galicia.

Fast and simple charging with Plug & Charge

The station offers 36 charging points with CCS connectors, the standard for Europe. Twelve chargers can deliver up to 400 kW of power, while the remaining 24 provide up to 160 kW. These capabilities support Zunder’s ambition to be a leading ultra-fast charging provider in Spain.

Equipped with Plug & Charge technology, the new hub allows drivers to plug in and charge without extra steps, simplifying the process. Various payment options are also available, including bank cards.

Challenges remain for Spain’s EV infrastructure

The new charging hub is a milestone for Spain’s charging infrastructure, where fast chargers are currently in short supply, making up just 6% of all charging points. Spain has set a target of 200,000 charging points by 2030, but at present, the country has just 53 charging points per 100,000 people.

Busy travel periods, like holidays, often highlight the lack of adequate charging infrastructure, particularly around major cities like Barcelona and Madrid. Many existing stations are also low-capacity, adding to the challenge. Despite this, the opening of Zunder’s ultra-fast charging station in Asturias represents a significant move towards meeting the 2030 target and addressing the rising demand for EV charging in Spain.
