In 2024, Spain solidified its position as the premier travel destination for German tourists, welcoming 11.9 million visitors from Germany.
This figure represents an 8.6% increase compared to 2023. German tourists’ spending in Spain also saw a significant rise, totaling over €15.5 billion—a 17.6% uptick from the previous year.
Positive outlook for 2025 amid economic concerns
Projections for 2025 remain optimistic, with expectations of continued growth in German tourism to Spain. The German Travel Association (DRV) anticipates a 6% increase in travel spending, reaching €85 billion for the 2024/25 tourist year.
However, the number of travellers is expected to decline slightly by 1%, totaling approximately 45 million. Despite these positive forecasts, economic challenges in Germany, including a 0.2% decline in GDP in 2024, may influence future travel decisions.
Spain’s continued appeal
Spain consistently ranks as the top foreign destination for German tourists, followed by Austria, Greece, and Turkey. The country’s diverse offerings, from cultural experiences to beach resorts, cater to a wide range of preferences. Airlines are enhancing connectivity between the two nations, with new routes such as Düsseldorf-Seville and Berlin-Bilbao, facilitating easier access for travellers.
Early bookings and all-inclusive packages gain popularity
German travellers are increasingly favouring early bookings and all-inclusive packages. Currently, 35% of trips are booked nine months in advance, and half of the trips for 2025 have already been secured. This trend indicates a strong demand for well-organised travel experiences, with Spain being a preferred choice.
Regional highlights: Costa del Sol
The Costa del Sol region has experienced a notable influx of German tourists. In 2024, approximately 803,000 German visitors arrived, marking a 9.9% increase from the previous year. These tourists contributed nearly €1.3 billion to the local economy, a 15.4% rise in revenue.
Economic factors influencing travel
While the tourism sector shows resilience, Germany’s economic slowdown and political shifts could impact travel patterns. The slight contraction in GDP and ongoing political developments may lead to more cautious spending among German consumers, potentially affecting their travel plans.
Spain’s allure for German tourists remains robust, supported by strategic travel offerings and strong bilateral ties. However, economic and political factors in Germany warrant close monitoring, as they may influence future tourism trends.
