In the wake of the recent DANA storms, Mercadona has intensified its support efforts to assist affected communities, employees, and local businesses. Under the leadership of Laura Cruz, Mercadona’s Social Action Director, the company is coordinating an extensive relief operation, prioritising the donation of food and essential supplies.

To date, Mercadona has distributed over 300 tonnes of essential goods, made possible by collaboration with its suppliers.

Mercadona’s efforts have been especially directed at food banks and charities in areas impacted by the disaster. With ongoing contact with the Valencia Food Bank, Mercadona has coordinated donations exceeding ten trailer loads of food. In collaboration with suppliers, Mercadona is also supporting Ricard Camarena’s “Charity Kitchen” initiative, which has been producing thousands of hot meals daily for those in need.

Resources for emergency response and employee support

Beyond immediate donations, Mercadona has committed its resources to facilitate aid distribution and assist local authorities. Moreover, the company has provided logistical support and designated facilities, including the use of a 7,000-square-metre warehouse in Picassent, Valencia, to organise and store donated items. Mercadona has also granted access to its transport fleet to distribute goods and support the efforts of emergency units stationed in the area.

Additionally, Mercadona has put significant focus on supporting its employees affected by the storm. According to El País, the company has committed €40 million to cover housing and personal property losses, with affected workers receiving payments based on the extent of their damages. Employees whose primary residences were destroyed will receive up to €50,000, while those with partially damaged homes can expect up to €25,000. Financial assistance for vehicle replacements includes €15,000 for cars and lower amounts for other modes of personal transportation. These payments are scheduled for November 21, providing a measure of relief for Mercadona’s workforce.

Alcem-se initiative: Financial aid for local businesses

Further addressing the economic impact of DANA, Juan Roig, owner of Mercadona, launched the Alcem-se platform. Developed through Marina de Empresas, this initiative offers €25 million in support to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), startups, and self-employed workers recover from the economic blow of the floods. The platform’s primary objective is to minimise business closures and revitalise the local economy in affected areas.

Business owners can apply for support through the Marina de Empresas website, where they can request guidance on sourcing new clients, relocating equipment, or seeking other operational assistance. Depending on need, Alcem-se will offer aid through grants or tailored expert advice, with funds available in amounts up to €10,000 per applicant.

Continued commitment to community resilience

Mercadona and Marina de Empresas’ combined relief efforts underline their shared commitment to Valencia and surrounding communities impacted by DANA. By coordinating food relief, employee aid, and financial support for local businesses, Mercadona aims to foster recovery and contribute to community resilience through this challenging time.
