After nearly three decades, La Carihuela beach in Torremolinos has finally earned the prestigious Blue Flag status—completing a clean sweep across the resort’s four main beaches and cementing its place among Spain’s best coastal destinations.

The announcement marks a historic first for this Costa del Sol favourite: every main beach—La Carihuela, Bajondillo, Playamar and Los Álamos—now holds the internationally recognised Blue Flag, a symbol of top-tier water quality, safety, sustainability and beach services.

La Carihuela, once a humble fishing district and now one of the resort’s most popular stretches of sand, had waited 27 years for this environmental accolade. That changed on 30 May, when the iconic blue flag was hoisted during a formal ceremony attended by Mayor Margarita del Cid.

Celebrating the achievement, Del Cid praised years of investment in the coastline, highlighting improvements in accessibility, sanitation and eco-awareness. “This is not just a milestone, but a confirmation that Torremolinos is moving decisively towards quality and sustainability,” she said.

What the Blue Flag actually means

Awarded annually by the Foundation for Environmental Education (via its Spanish partner ADEAC), the Blue Flag is much more than a badge of honour. It guarantees beachgoers access to clean waters, proper waste management, lifeguard services, and facilities that respect both people and the planet.

In the eyes of international tourists, it’s a seal of approval that signals not just sun and sand, but a well-managed, safe and environmentally responsible destination.

Boosting the town’s green credentials

Torremolinos has long been one of the most popular coastal getaways in Andalucía, but in recent years it’s been working hard to shake off dated stereotypes and emerge as a forward-looking resort. The Blue Flag now fluttering across its shoreline is not only a draw for eco-conscious tourists but also an indicator of deeper change.

With rising awareness of environmental issues and the growing demand for sustainable tourism, destinations that meet strict standards are standing out. Torremolinos’ transformation is part of a broader trend across Spain, where coastal municipalities are competing not just for visitors, but for recognition as responsible beach destinations.

A win for La Carihuela, a win for Torremolinos

For locals and tourists alike, the Blue Flag at La Carihuela is more than just a formality—it’s a long-awaited validation of the area’s charm and the efforts behind its upkeep. As visitors flock to the Costa del Sol this summer, they’ll find not just golden sands and warm waters, but a coastline that’s cleaner, safer, and greener than ever.
