Spain’s answer to Rio: Monumental Christ statue to rise in Madrid

Bigger than Brazil’s

Christ statue in Madrid

A monumental new statue of Christ is set to transform the skyline of Madrid’s outskirts by 2030. The Corazón de Jesús, under development in Boadilla del Monte, will become the tallest statue of Christ in the world, overtaking Brazil’s iconic Cristo Redentor.

Standing 37 metres high with a 60-metre wingspan, the Corazón de Jesús will surpass Rio de Janeiro’s world-famous landmark, which measures 30 metres in height. Its sheer scale and strategic placement between the M-50 and M-501 ring roads mean it will be visible from miles away — and that’s entirely by design.

Madrid’s ambition isn’t simply architectural. The goal is to establish Boadilla del Monte as a new global pilgrimage destination, drawing visitors not only for its spiritual significance but also for the innovative design of the statue itself.

A technological and spiritual marvel

Constructed from sustainable materials, the Christ figure’s torso and head will be reinforced concrete, while the arms will be crafted from lightweight carbon fibre — a blend of durability and cutting-edge engineering. The statue’s most remarkable feature? A 2.5-metre-wide heart that descends each morning to the base of the monument, allowing visitors to witness it up close. By sunset, it ascends back into the chest — a symbolic and mechanical homage to daily spiritual rhythm.

From local vision to international symbol

Unlike many large-scale religious monuments, this project didn’t begin with government or church funding. It was initiated by local residents who formed the Corazón de Jesús de Boadilla association, aiming not only to honour their faith but also to offer a social support mission. The organisation plans to use the statue as a beacon of hope — both literally and figuratively — supporting those in need through community outreach.

So far, the project has raised more than €90,000 in donations, with contributions still being accepted. The land has been provided by the local council, but no public funds are being used. Support has come from the Getafe bishopric, and official planning approval has already been granted.

The Christ statue is new landmark for Madrid and Spain

Construction is due to begin in 2027, with the unveiling expected in 2030. If completed as planned, the Corazón de Jesús could become one of Spain’s most striking religious landmarks — a modern companion to the Sagrada Familia and Santiago de Compostela.

While the project has stirred admiration among supporters, it’s also sparked debate over the blending of religious symbolism and spectacle in public spaces. But for its creators, the vision is clear: a powerful tribute to faith, built by the people, for the people.

Monumental aspirations

The Corazón de Jesús could mark a new era for spiritual tourism in Spain, cementing Madrid not just as the political and cultural capital, but also as a major destination for global pilgrimage. As 2030 approaches, eyes from across the world will turn towards Boadilla — and the rising Christ above it.
