Ouigo and Iryo, two prominent operators in Spain’s railway market, are planning to introduce low-cost high-speed services between Asturias and Madrid.

This initiative marks the second phase of Spain’s railway liberalisation, spearheaded by Adif, the state-owned railway infrastructure manager.

Increased competition for Renfe

Renfe dominates the high-speed rail market on this route, offering premium AVE services and budget-friendly Avlo trains. However, Ouigo and Iryo’s entry promises to challenge Renfe’s monopoly, potentially driving down ticket prices.

Ouigo, which already provides budget-friendly services between Andalucia and Madrid for less than €15, has shown significant interest in connecting Asturias to the capital. Meanwhile, Alsa, a key player in Spain’s bus transport sector, is reportedly considering entering the rail market, further intensifying competition.

Overcoming technical challenges

Expanding high-speed rail to Asturias presents technical hurdles. One of the primary challenges is the need for variable-gauge trains, essential for routes requiring seamless transition between different rail widths. Currently, Talgo is the only manufacturer producing such trains in Spain, but limited production capacity is delaying progress.

Efforts are underway to address these challenges, with central and regional governments collaborating to facilitate solutions and ensure the project’s success.

Benefits for travellers

The introduction of new operators brings immediate benefits to travellers: more choice, competitive fares, and improved services. Experiences from other routes, such as Madrid-Barcelona, show the impact of rail liberalisation, where fares have dropped by up to 30%.

Ouigo’s success in connecting Andalucia and the Levante region demonstrates the potential for affordable rail travel across Spain. Increased competition could make high-speed rail a more accessible option for Asturias-Madrid commuters and tourists alike.

Enhanced connections for Asturias

Asturias stands to gain significantly from this initiative. Better connections to Madrid mean more frequent services and cost-effective alternatives for passengers. If all goes to plan, the first commercial services on this route could begin as early as 2026.

This improved connectivity would not only boost regional mobility but also support economic growth by encouraging tourism and business travel.

The future of rail transport in Spain

Spain’s rail liberalisation is transforming the sector, with Asturias playing a pivotal role in this new phase. Increased competition is set to deliver lower prices and enhanced services, solidifying high-speed rail as an attractive choice for both domestic and international travellers.

What is Adif?

Adif, under the Spanish Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, manages Spain’s rail infrastructure. It plays a crucial role in facilitating equal access to rail networks and driving the adoption of rail as a preferred mode of transport.

The planned introduction of low-cost high-speed rail services between Asturias and Madrid represents a significant milestone in Spain’s transport evolution. With increased competition, better services, and lower fares on the horizon, travellers stand to benefit greatly from this new era of rail connectivity.
