Valencia reconstruction after the floods

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced an additional €1.35 billion to aid reconstruction efforts in the Valencia region following the devastating DANA storm on 29 October.

This pledge brings the total government commitment to €17.95 billion. The storm caused unprecedented flooding, resulting in 224 deaths, three missing persons, and widespread damage.

Government to fully fund infrastructure reconstruction

Speaking after a meeting with mayors from the 28 hardest-hit municipalities, Sánchez outlined the government’s plans to support affected areas. A key measure involves increasing the government’s contribution to municipal infrastructure reconstruction from 50% to 100%.

This expanded funding will provide €1.7 billion to rebuild nearly 100 administrative centres, 45 kindergartens, 58 libraries, 55 sports centres, 40 day centres, and 16 markets.

Additionally, the government will fully cover the €500 million required for water infrastructure reconstruction, ensuring vital services are restored to normal.

Collaboration with trade unions and local organisations

Sánchez also met with the Valencia Employers’ Association (CEV) and trade unions CCOO and UGT to discuss strategies for rebuilding industrial sites and revitalising the region’s economic structure. This collaboration aims to ensure sustainable recovery while safeguarding jobs and business operations in the affected areas.

Progress on financial support

During his address, Sánchez provided an update on the progress of financial aid distribution. To date, the central administration has processed 85% of applications for support and compensation, with around half already paid out.

Of the €1.6 billion disbursed so far:

  • €1.27 billion came from the Insurance Compensation Consortium.
  • €291 million was provided as direct aid to businesses and self-employed workers.

These efforts highlight the government’s commitment to delivering timely financial assistance to those in need.

Sánchez’s commitment to affected communities

Sánchez acknowledged the significant challenges that remain but reassured affected communities of the government’s continued support. He praised the constructive tone of the mayors involved and promised that aid would reach those in need as quickly as possible.

While urging patience, he emphasised that the government would not abandon the affected areas and reiterated his commitment to the ongoing recovery process.

The road ahead

The additional €1.35 billion marks a crucial step in addressing the aftermath of one of Spain’s most severe natural disasters. With comprehensive plans for infrastructure reconstruction, economic revitalisation, and financial aid distribution, the government aims to help Valencia recover and rebuild stronger than before.

The DANA storm of October 2023 left a lasting impact on the Valencia region. However, Sánchez’s pledge of further funding underscores the Spanish government’s resolve to support affected communities. Through collaboration and continued investment, the reconstruction process promises to restore normality and improve resilience against future disasters.
