Drivers in Spain targeted by traffic fine scam imitating the DGT

fake DGT traffic fine scam

The Guardia Civil has issued a fresh warning to motorists in Spain about a growing phishing scam involving fake traffic fines. Fraudsters are impersonating Spain’s traffic authority, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), to steal personal and banking data.

Several victims have reported losing up to €1,600 after receiving text messages or emails claiming they had an outstanding traffic fine. These messages link to a counterfeit website, which closely mimics the official DGT site.

How the scam works

The messages typically mention a pending fine and offer a 50% discount for quick payment. The aim is to create panic and encourage immediate action.

Once on the fake site, users are prompted to enter personal details, including bank information. The scam relies on urgency and imitation to catch victims off guard.

DGT communication protocols

The DGT does not notify drivers of traffic fines by SMS or email containing payment links. Official fines are sent only through the Dirección Electrónica Vial (DEV) or by post.

Anyone receiving a message claiming to be from the DGT should check whether it includes a link or request for payment. If it does, it’s a scam.

What you should do

If you receive a suspicious message:

  • Do not click any links.

  • Visit the official DGT website directly.

  • Log in via the DEV portal using your digital certificate, Cl@ve credentials, or the miDGT app.

  • Report the incident to INCIBE, Spain’s cybersecurity agency.

  • Inform your bank if you’ve entered financial details.

  • Take screenshots and file a report with the police.

Avoiding digital scams

Cybercrime in Spain is on the rise, and scammers are using more convincing methods. As public services shift online, it’s crucial to stay vigilant.

Short, urgent messages offering discounts or requesting payments should always raise a red flag. If in doubt, verify through official channels.

Staying secure with the DEV

Use the DEV system to safely access and pay any genuine traffic fines. If you haven’t signed up for this digital mailbox, you will continue to receive official notices by post.

Creating a DEV account is free and provides a secure way to manage traffic-related notifications.
