GRAN CANARIA – The Guardia Civil has investigated an individual for crimes related to flora, fauna, and domestic animals, as well as public safety violations. The investigation revealed that the person possessed 32 potentially dangerous animals in their residence in Telde, Gran Canaria.

The seized animals included species classified as potentially dangerous, venomous, and invasive in the Canary Islands. These included tarantulas and scorpions. Furthermore, some of these species are listed under the International CITES Convention.

These animals were housed in terrariums and various plastic containers within the individual’s home. These containers lacked the necessary safety measures required for such animals. In particular the venomous species like different tarantulas and a scorpion, which pose significant risk.

Online sales of protected species trigger investigation

The Guardia Civil’s SEPRONA unit learned that the individual was advertising the sale of certain animals on social media. These animals were listed under the CITES Convention and were potentially dangerous.

Upon this discovery, SEPRONA initiated an investigation due to the demand for these protected and dangerous species on social media.

Owner admits to possession of various dangerous animals

The individual admitted to the Guardia Civil agents that they owned various types of animals, including protected, invasive, and venomous species. The collection included arthropods like tarantulas, African snails, and a highly venomous scorpion; reptiles such as snakes, lizards, and turtles; and other animals considered invasive in the Canary Islands like Argentine cockroaches, mealworms, tree frogs, a chinchilla, and four rats.

Seizure of animals due to lack of documentation and safety measures

After confirming the existence of the animals, the Guardia Civil seized the 32 specimens due to the owner’s lack of legal documentation and inadequate safety conditions for their containment.

The confiscated animals have been relocated to the Cocodrilos Park animal rescue centre in Agüimes.

Legal proceedings

The investigated individual and the related case documents have been submitted to the judicial authorities at the Telde Court of Instruction, which is handling the case.
