On June 7, 2024, the Guardia Civil’s Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) intervened at a residence in Monistrol de Montserrat (Barcelona), rescuing a Mediterranean tortoise and two protected snakes.

Consequently, the action led to an investigation of an individual. This was for alleged illegal trafficking of protected or endangered species under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Investigation and Discovery in Monistrol de Montserrat

The Guardia Civil received information about the presence of exotic animals in a private residence. SEPRONA, accompanied by a municipal agent, conducted an inspection with the voluntary and written consent of the homeowner. Furthermore, the inspection revealed a Mediterranean tortoise in an aquarium and two snakes in terrariums. However, all animals were found to be in good condition and had the necessary food.

Species Details

The Mediterranean Tortoise (Testudo Hermanni) is listed as a protected species under the Spanish Catalog of Endangered Species. The snakes included;

  • a Burmese Python (Python Molurus Bivittatus), one of the largest snake species in the world, capable of growing over 5 metres in length and exceeding 100 kg in weight
  • a Boa Constrictor, a popular species native to America

Transfer to Recovery Centre

The rescued animals were transported to the Amphibian and Reptile Recovery Centre of Catalonia, located in Masquefa (Barcelona). Moreover, here they received appropriate care and rehabilitation.

Legal Action

The individual in question is under investigation for violating laws related to the illegal trafficking of protected or endangered species, as outlined by CITES regulations. Further legal proceedings are expected as the investigation continues.
