Officers from the Catalan police force Mossos d’Esquadra have arrested six people in a large-scale operation targeting a gang involved in robbing vehicles on Catalonia’s motorways.
The operation took place in the early morning of Thursday. It involved a coordinated deployment of approximately one hundred officers from the Traffic Department, the Rubí Investigation Unit and the Gavà Investigation Unit.
Searches and arrests
The Generalitat police carried out six raids and searches on homes in Barcelona, Badalona, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and Cerdanyola del Vallès. This action followed a violent robbery that took place at the end of October on the AP-7 near Tarragona.
Among the six arrested are four members of the organisation. The fifth person was wanted on a court warrant, and a sixth person had a previous conviction. In addition, the police expect to quickly arrest a seventh suspect, who is currently in prison, for involvement in these crimes.
Continuing the research
The Mossos d’Esquadra have stated that the investigation is still ongoing. They are still looking for another person for a crime against public health. The criminal organisation in question has caused a lot of unrest on the motorways of Catalonia.
Background
The investigation against this gang started following a violent robbery in Tarragona. Since then, the Mossos d’Esquadra have worked intensively to track down and arrest the perpetrators. The gang used stolen cars to commit their crimes, which made the investigation extra challenging for the police.
Authorities hope the recent arrests will put an end to the series of robberies. This will also restore safety to Catalan motorways.
