excessive water use will be charged

Parcent, a small town in the Marina Alta region, has taken a pioneering step in addressing water waste during the ongoing drought. The town is introducing penalties for excessive use. From this week, households consuming more than 15 cubic metres of water per quarter will face increased charges on their water bills.

The decision to penalise excessive water use comes after a particularly difficult summer for many municipalities in the Marina Alta, with Parcent among those still facing restrictions well into autumn. With limited rainfall and no immediate relief in sight, the town is the first in the region to implement the CHJ’s decree on water conservation during drought periods.

Tariffs to deter unnecessary water usage

The new tariffs came into effect on Tuesday. According to the local council the tariffs aim to “incentivise the reduction of unnecessary water consumption and ensure supply for all residents”. Households will still pay the regular rate for water use up to 15 cubic metres per quarter, but any consumption beyond this threshold will incur higher fees.

The price hikes are steep: water consumption between 16 and 30 cubic metres per quarter will cost €1.52 per cubic metre. This doubles the usual rate of €0.76 during non-drought periods. For those using between 31 and 45 cubic metres, the cost rises to €4.00 per cubic metre. Finally, for usage exceeding 45 cubic metres, the charge is €10.00 per cubic metre. These increased rates will be reflected in the fourth-quarter bills and will remain in effect as long as the CHJ maintains its drought alert.

Tackling non-essential water use

Parcent’s new tariff system specifically targets non-essential water uses such as garden irrigation, car washing, pool filling, and the use of high-pressure cleaning devices like Kärtchers. These activities have already been restricted since the drought alert was issued. However, the new pricing structure ensures that any violation of these restrictions will hit residents financially.

The local government has repeatedly communicated these restrictions through official channels. However, with the introduction of the new tariff system, it is no longer just a matter of social awareness—it directly affects the wallets of those who continue to waste water.
