From small acorns great oaks grow, as the saying goes. Yet a tree doesn’t grow without water, good soil, the right amount of sun, visiting insects and oxygen. The same goes for start-ups and SMEs. That’s where Axarquia Business Networking comes in.
Let’s clarify that – a tree needs the above. What a business needs is a clear vision combined with adaptability, quality products/services, contacts, customers, effective leadership, a marketing strategy and customer care. That’s true whether you’re a one-person band or a more substantial organisation. Yet, you can have all that and still need that extra push to grow your business. Again, this is where networking can be a boon.
A good business network isn’t just about exchanging business cards; it’s about building real relationships, sharing knowledge, providing access to new opportunities and supporting each other. It’s about having a go-to group of people who understand your challenges and can offer practical advice, insights, or even just a friendly ear over coffee.
With that in mind, a group of like-minded business owners to the east of Malaga decided to make something happen. The small acorn is Axarquia Business Networking (ABN), they’re aiming to help great oaks grow.
Since its launch in January this year, ABN has already become a hub for business owners in the region. Founded by six businesses — Trilingo Idiomas, LET Plus Spain, Brand Wise Content, BluCee Real Estate, Aynat & Aynat Lawyers, Trilingo Translations, and Smarter Payments — the group was set up to help businesses grow through knowledge exchange, collaboration, and meaningful connections.
What makes ABN unique is its focus on English-speaking businesses. Meetings are held in English, making it easier for expats and international entrepreneurs to tap into the Spanish business community. The goal is to create an open, supportive environment for members and develop their businesses both in Spain and beyond.
One business per niche
Unlike many networking groups, ABN keeps things fair by limiting membership to one business per niche. So, no stepping on each other’s toes. If there are two lawyers, for example, one might specialise in property law while the other focuses on wills and inheritance. This way, everyone gets the most out of their membership without worrying about direct competition within the group.
Beyond business, ABN is committed to giving back. The group proudly supports Lux Mundi in Torre del Mar, an ecumenical charity that runs a monthly Food Drive. This initiative provides essential assistance to over 100 people, including 55 children, in the local community.
Weekly Meetings
ABN meets every Tuesday morning from 7 am to 9 am, early enough to fit into a busy schedule. The group first met at LET Plus in Caleta de Vélez but quickly outgrew the space. Now based at Lux Mundi in Torre del Mar, membership has grown to 17 and is climbing every week. A small €5 fee per session covers the cost of the room, refreshments, and other essentials.
Each week, members have the chance to share their expertise through presentations, offering practical business insights. And when a topic needs a specialist’s touch, guest speakers are brought in to give expert advice. Whether it’s legal know-how, marketing tips, or financial wisdom, there’s always something useful to take away.
Suzanne Mastbroek, a celebrant, attended her first ABN meeting at the end of February. She says the meetings are worth getting up early for. “I honestly didn’t think ABN was something for me. I’ve just started my business; it’s still in its early stages and it even makes me giggle saying that I do have my own business. But after one meeting I already felt the support of the group. Not only that, ABN motivates me. It’s very rewarding to hear the stories, tricks and tips of established business people. Yes, you have to get up early, but it’s really worth it.”
Get Involved
ABN is also launching a website soon, designed by Marketing Rápido, to provide extra resources and information for members, prospective members, and the wider business community.
Kerry from Nerja Coffee Roasters feels teamwork is key to the group’s success: “Being part of a team where you all spread the word about each other’s businesses is invaluable and a beautiful collaboration of energy.”
If you’re looking to grow your network, pick up practical business advice, and be part of a friendly, supportive community, Axarquía Business Networking is well worth a look. Whether you’re a start-up, a seasoned entrepreneur, or just looking to meet like-minded professionals, ABN offers a space where business and connections grow together.
