For the first time, tourists from the United States have surpassed those from the UK in terms of overall spending in Mallorca. A recent report, based on card payment data, revealed that American visitors accounted for approximately 15% of the total tourist expenditure in Palma this summer.
This places them just behind German tourists, who contribute around 30%, and ahead of the British, who have traditionally been the island’s biggest spenders.
The shift is welcome news for local businesses and the hospitality industry, with American visitors now seen as particularly valuable customers. According to various trade associations on the island, including the Jaume II Merchants Association and Restauración-CAEB, the trend underscores the need for Mallorca to strengthen its appeal in the North American market.
Calls for enhanced promotion and connectivity
Local business groups are urging Mallorcan and Balearic authorities to step up promotional efforts in the U.S. They argue that increased visibility could attract even more American visitors, who are known for their high spending levels. In addition, these associations are calling for improved connectivity, including more direct flights between major U.S. cities and Palma de Mallorca Airport.
Representatives from Afedeco and Pimeco, two of the island’s major trade groups, have joined the call for expanded air routes. Moreover, they believe direct flights would make Mallorca a more accessible and attractive destination for Americans, helping to build on this summer’s success.
A positive sign for the local economy
The rise in American spending comes as the island looks to diversify its tourism base and reduce its reliance on European visitors. With American tourists now outspending the British, local businesses are optimistic about the potential economic impact. From high-end restaurants to boutique stores, American spending habits are already influencing business strategies across the island.
