A young man was killed in a public park in east Madrid early on Tuesday morning after being stabbed twice in the chest. A suspect was arrested within the hour.
A twenty-year-old man of Nigerian nationality died on Tuesday morning after being stabbed in a park in the San Blas-Canillejas district of Madrid. The attack took place at around 7.15 am in the Parque Paraíso, a public green space in the Simancas neighbourhood, and was witnessed by several people who raised the alarm shortly afterwards.
The victim, identified in Spanish media by his initials D.O., suffered two stab wounds, one of them directly to the chest. Officers from the National Police arrived first and began emergency first aid on the spot. Medical staff from SAMUR-Civil Protection took over and continued advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation for more than thirty minutes. Despite their efforts, the young man could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A dispute that turned fatal
According to witnesses present in the park, the victim and his attacker had become involved in an argument before the situation turned violent. The assailant produced a knife, stabbed the young man and fled. Police sources told Spanish media that the area where the body was found is well known to authorities as a location regularly used for street-level drug transactions, and that investigators believe the dispute was connected to the local drug trade.
The National Police’s Homicide Group took charge of the investigation. Within an hour of the attack, Madrid Municipal Police detained a man in the vicinity of Calle Emilio Ferrari, close to the park, as the alleged perpetrator. No further details about the suspect have been made public at this stage.
A neighbourhood on edge
San Blas-Canillejas is a largely working-class district in the eastern periphery of Madrid. Like several other parts of the city, sections of it have experienced persistent problems with open-air drug dealing, and Tuesday’s killing has renewed concern among local residents about safety in the area’s parks, particularly during the early morning hours.
The story was covered across the Spanish press on Tuesday, with outlets including El País, El Mundo and Eldiario.es all confirming the same core details shortly after the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing. The suspect is in custody, and formal charges are expected in the coming days.
