Spain May weather delays summer heat as warmer spell waits

Spain May weather

Spain may feel more spring than summer this week, with cooler-than-usual conditions expected across much of the country before temperatures begin to rise later in May.

The latest May weather outlook in Spain from AEMET points to a cooler week from 11 to 17 May across much of the Peninsula, especially in western, central, and southern areas. Rain is also expected during the first part of the week, mainly in northern and western Spain.

Summer has not quite arrived yet

Anyone waiting for the first real heat push of the year may need a little patience.

AEMET’s weekly outlook suggests temperatures will stay below normal in many regions during the current week. That means no major nationwide heatwave signal for now.

The pattern is more unsettled than hot, with showers more likely early in the week and cooler air holding across large parts of inland Spain.

Where temperatures could still feel warm

Southern and Mediterranean areas will still feel mild or warm at times.

Local forecasts for Málaga, for example, put daytime highs around the upper 20s this week, while Murcia has been among the warmer spots nationally.

That is warm enough for terraces, beaches, and outdoor plans, but it is not yet the kind of intense inland heat Spain often sees later in the season.

Late May could bring a change

The warmer signal appears stronger from the second half of the month.

Eltiempo.es says the final stretch of May could bring a more summer-like feel to many parts of Spain, especially inland areas.

AEMET’s longer-range seasonal outlook for May, June, and July also points to a higher probability of warmer-than-normal temperatures across the whole country.

Why this matters for residents and visitors

May is a tricky month in Spain. Mornings can still feel fresh, especially inland, while afternoons can change quickly if skies clear.

For residents, that means keeping an eye on daily forecasts rather than assuming summer has arrived. For visitors, it means packing for changeable weather, particularly in northern and inland areas.

The bigger heat question is likely to return later this month. If forecasts hold, Spain could move from a cool mid-May to a much warmer final stretch before June begins.

A cooler pause before summer builds

For now, Spain is not facing a major heatwave-style spell. The immediate story is cooler, unsettled May weather, followed by signs of a warmer turn later in the month.

That may be welcome for anyone not quite ready for sleepless summer nights. But with seasonal forecasts already pointing to warmer weather, the pause may not last long.
