After days of blue skies and unusually warm April weather, Spain’s weather warnings today are back on the map. A new Atlantic-driven change has put Andalucia, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Galicia, and the Canary Islands under alerts for a mix of rain, thunderstorms, strong gusts, and rough seas.
According to AEMET, the shift is being driven by a trough linked to a colder air mass and its associated fronts, which is why conditions are turning more unstable across the western half of the country first. The heaviest showers are expected in parts of western Galicia, Castilla y León, Andalucía, and Extremadura, with some bursts strong enough to bring thunder as the day progresses.
This is not one of those days when every corner of Spain sees the same thing at the same time. The more settled feel hangs on better in the east, and in the Balearics, but across the west, the pattern is clearly shifting. It is a reminder that early April can still swing sharply between spring warmth and a more unsettled Atlantic setup.
Where warnings are active
The most eye-catching part of the forecast is not just the rain, but the combination of hazards. The national warning picture includes gusts above 70 km/h in exposed inland areas, especially in parts of western Spain and the Cantabrian range. Meanwhile, coastal alerts are active for A Coruña, La Palma, and El Hierro because of rougher sea conditions.
There is also another detail worth watching. AEMET says dust in suspension over parts of central and western Spain could turn some showers muddy, which means cars, terraces, and outdoor furniture may end up wearing the weather long after the clouds move on.
Andalucia comes back into play
For readers in the south, this is where the forecast becomes more relevant. AEMET’s regional outlook for Andalucia says skies will turn cloudy or very cloudy, with showers spreading from west to east through the day. It also says some could become locally strong and thundery, especially in the western half.
That makes Tuesday a day to keep an eye on if you are driving, walking long distances, planning outdoor work, or heading for the coast. Huelva is among the provinces specifically flagged for wind warnings, while the broader national outlook includes Andalucia among the regions facing the day’s more unsettled conditions.
Cooler in the west, less change in the east
Temperatures are also set to shift. AEMET says daytime highs will fall in the western half of the peninsula, in some places noticeably, while eastern areas and the Strait should see less change. In the Canary Islands, rain is expected mainly in the north of the more mountainous islands, starting with La Palma, and temperatures are set to drop more clearly in higher areas.
That matters because the last few days have felt more like late spring than the opening stretch of April in parts of Spain. Tuesday does not look like a full national washout, but it does mark a clear break from the calm, warm pattern many people had settled into.
A more typical April reminder
Tuesday is one of those classic Spanish spring weather days when one side of the country can still feel manageable while another turns briefly wild. Suncream may not be going away for long, but for now, umbrellas, windproof jackets, and a quick check of local warnings are back in the conversation.
