Several regions in Spain are under weather warnings this Wednesday due to heavy rainfall, storms, and strong waves.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued weather warnings for ten provinces in Spain, including Andalucia, Galicia, and the Canary Islands, as unsettled conditions persist.
Orange rain alerts in Andalucia
Huelva and Seville in Andalucia are under an orange weather alert for intense rainfall. These areas are also affected by storm warnings, alongside Cádiz. A similar warning has been issued for A Coruña in Galicia, indicating the potential for disruptive weather. In the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and Tenerife are under alerts for rain, storms, and waves.
Heavy rainfall and storm activity
The unstable conditions are linked to storm ‘Garoé,’ which is causing significant rainfall across various regions. Aemet forecasts heavy precipitation in the southwestern quadrant of the peninsula, Galicia, and parts of the Pyrenees. The west of the Central System and areas in Extremadura and western Andalucia are also likely to experience intense rain, with a chance of sea storms or gusty winds.
The Canary Islands are bracing for possible heavy showers and strong gusts, further amplifying the impact of the storm.
Snowfall in mountainous areas
Snowfall is expected on the peaks of the Pyrenees and other northern mountain ranges. Snow levels are estimated at 1,800-2,200 metres on the peninsula and 2,000-2,400 metres in the Canary Islands. While snowfall may not be widespread, it could create hazardous conditions in affected areas.
Temperature trends
Maximum temperatures are set to drop in regions such as the Canary Islands, Galicia, Asturias, and parts of the Guadalquivir Valley. Conversely, temperatures may rise in the northeastern half of the peninsula, the Balearic Islands, and the Alborán area.
Minimum temperatures will decrease in Galicia and the Canary Islands, but most areas will see a slight increase, particularly in the northeast quadrant. Teruel is forecast to record the lowest minimum temperature at 3ºC, followed by Lleida at 4ºC. Light frost may occur in the Pyrenees.
Wind warnings
Winds are expected to blow from the south and southwest across much of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Northern winds will dominate in Galicia and the Cantabrian region. Strong gusts are likely along the west coast of Galicia, the Gulf of Cádiz, and in Empordà, increasing the risk of disruption.
Stay alert and informed
As adverse weather conditions continue to affect multiple regions, residents and travellers are advised to stay informed through official updates from Aemet. Exercise caution in affected areas, especially near coastal zones and mountainous regions.
