FOOTBALL – UK football has come to the end of the season. The top two in Scottish teams have had another amazing streak. And the English premiership went right down to the wire.

Myra, David and Russell in Seville

Rangers finished runners up in the Europa League after an incredible performance in Seville against Eintracht Frankfurt. Despite Rangers scoring the first goal, the Frankfurt side soon equalised. The match ended 1-1 after extra time, meaning the game went to penalties. Although Rangers lost 5-4 on penalties, their travelling supporters had nothing but admiration for them.

We were lucky to interview Rangers fans, Russell, Myra, and David (pictured) from Lanarkshire in Scotland. And this is what they said about their experiences in Seville.

“We got to Seville, and WOW! It was so hot and busy with supporters everywhere you looked. It was a wonderful sight to see. We didn´t win but would do it all again. We were so proud to be there, and of our team and fellow supporters”

Scottish Cup Final

On returning to Scotland, Rangers faced Hearts in the Scottish Cup Final. No doubt the side were still buzzing after their performance in the Europa League, and the support of their fans. However, it was not an easy game.

The 90 minutes came and went with no goals despite 3 minutes stoppage time. Then into extra time, Rangers pulled 2 goals out the bag in just 3 minutes winning the Cup Final.

Goals came from Ryan Jack after 94 minutes when he scored from the edge of the box putting the ball at the top of the net. The second goal came just 3 minutes later, when Scott Wright finished it off with his strike into the left corner of the net.

Celtic FC

Scottish Premiership winners, Celtic finished on 93 points, with Rangers 2nd on 89. They were the 2 front runners with Hearts in 3rd place – a massive 32 points behind Celtic. This is the 10th time out of 11 seasons that Celtic have won the league. This means, they have also secured a place in the Champions’ League group stage.

Ange Postecoglou also guided his team to lift the Scottish League Cup in his first term as manager.

Rangers have won the title a total of 55 times, with Celtic coming a close second with as 52 times winner.

UK football saw more drama yesterday when the English premiership teams played the last game of the season.

The top 4

The top 4 went into the last game, knowing that, except for Chelsea they all had to win. Chelsea were safe in third place.

However, if Tottenham lost, and Arsenal won, Tottenham would move from 4th to 5th position meaning they would go from qualification for the Champions League group stage into the Europa League group stage.

With only 1 point between the top two, Manchester City and Liverpool, City only needed a draw or a win to take to title.

Liverpool´s game against Wolves began with a goal for the Wanderers after just 3 minutes. Aston Villa also scored first against Man City. However, by this point Liverpool had equalised, and Man City were a goal down. This is how both first halves ended.

The pressure was then on both teams to score. Then came 3 goals in 5 minutes for Man City. Gungogan scored a double after 76 and 81 minutes, and Rodi after 78 minutes.

Man City were now 3-2 up, and Liverpool still 1-1 with 10 minutes remaining. Liverpool did manage to win the game after another 2 goals came from Salah and Robertson, but it was not enough to lift the trophy.

All 4 at the took 3 points, meaning there was no change at the top, and Man City lifted the title.

Liverpool finished second, with Chelsea in 3rd and Tottenham in 4th. All 4 qualified for the Champions League group stages.

Europa League group stage

Arsenal won their game, but as Tottenham also won, there was no change in their position. Crystal Palace scored the only goal of the match against Manchester United after 27 minutes. West Ham went one up after 40 minutes. This was a tense period for Manchester United, as if the games ended like this, United would move from the Europa League group stage to the Europa Conference League qualifiers.

However, in the second half, Brighton scored 3 goals against West Ham meaning no change in the table positions.

Manchester City lifted 2021/22 Premiership trophy. What a nail biting finish to the UK football season!
