Summer seems to be off to a sluggish start, especially in the northern and eastern regions of the Iberian Peninsula. The Spanish meteorological agency, AEMET, has issued a gloomy forecast for early July, traditionally a month of high temperatures and clear blue skies.

The first days of July will be marked by overcast skies, persistent rain, and thunderstorms across various parts of Spain. Meteorologists predict that cloudy skies will linger in the far north, while a new cloud cover is forming over the Spanish plateau. This will move towards the eastern third of the country and Catalonia. It will eventually reach the Balearic Islands early next week, where thunderstorms are also expected.

Gloomy with rain on Monday

Rain is forecasted for Monday morning along the coasts of the Valencia region (Costa Blanca) and Catalonia. The Balearic Islands, including Ibiza and Mallorca, will also experience rain on Monday.

Instability will not be confined to these areas. Cloudy skies are expected during the early hours of the day in parts of the Central System, the Iberian System, Extremadura, and the Strait of Gibraltar. Temperatures will rise in the western half of the country.  Meanwhile they will drop in the eastern regions and the Balearic Islands.

Stabilisation expected from Tuesday

From Tuesday, the weather situation may start to stabilise slightly. However, rain is still expected on July 2 in parts of the northeastern interior, and cloudy skies will persist in parts of Catalonia. Although no rainfall is anticipated.

Elsewhere in the country, clouds are expected to gradually clear, allowing the return of blue skies. In the Canary Islands, cloudy periods are likely in the north, with potential localised rainfall in mountainous areas.
