Isabel Peralta convicted for far-right remarks

Spanish national Isabel Peralta, a prominent figure within the far-right group NS Bastión Frontal, has been sentenced by a Madrid court to one year in prison. The conviction stems from her involvement in a 2021 demonstration, during which the court found she incited hatred against Moroccan and Muslim migrants.

On 18 May 2021, Isabel Peralta addressed a crowd outside the Moroccan embassy in Madrid during an unauthorised protest that ended in unrest. Speaking to several hundred people through a megaphone, she urged action: “We will stand up to them, death to the invader, she declared. The court ruled that her statements “undermined the dignity of Moroccan migrants.” Video clips later surfaced online referencing an alleged “racial replacement”, which were viewed thousands of times.

According to the judges, her speech was “clearly intended to incite hostility” and went far beyond the bounds of legitimate political discourse. She was found guilty of inciting hatred and discrimination, and alongside the prison sentence, was fined €1,080.

Court stresses limits to free speech

Isabel Peralta’s conviction highlights the legal boundaries of free speech in Spain. “This is not about dissenting views,” the ruling states, “but about the deliberate denigration of a vulnerable group.” While the prosecution had called for a harsher sentence, the court took into account the broader context and Peralta’s personal circumstances.

According to ElDiario.es, judges described her address as “unmistakably militant and aimed at violent confrontation.” Her anti-Islam rhetoric, including a call for “radical resistance” against the religion, was at odds with her courtroom defence. Herein, she claimed to harbour no hostility toward any faith. The court concluded that her remarks were not “legitimate criticism” of migration issues, but a message of hate delivered in a “violent and intimidating context”, aimed at fuelling “a climate of aggressive rejection of Moroccan migrants.”

Bastión Frontal’s controversial track record

NS Bastión Frontal, the neo-Nazi group with which Peralta is affiliated, has been linked to numerous violent and racist incidents since its founding in 2020. While Peralta does not officially hold a leadership position, the court considered her a key figure in the movement. Her prominent role as a speaker during the protest reinforced this view.

The judges also examined the broader context of the demonstration. They noted it was organised by a group known since 2020 for “overt confrontations with Moroccan immigration.” They added, “All of her actions took place within an openly racist setting, as evidenced by the slogans chanted. Above that, this is confirmed by the subsequent online statement.”

The protest occurred during a period of heightened diplomatic tensions between Spain and Morocco. According to experts, this factor may have contributed to the charged atmosphere. The court took this backdrop into account when assessing the gravity of the offence.

Rise within the far-right scene

Peralta first gained notoriety in far-right circles after speaking at a 2021 memorial for the fallen of the Blue Division. Here, she declared: “The enemy will always be the same, though it may wear different masks: the Jew.” She has since appeared frequently at Bastión Frontal events. Additionally, she took part in demonstrations on Madrid’s Ferraz Street in November 2023. In 2022, she was expelled from Germany after publicly wearing a swastika.

Peralta has the right to appeal the verdict.
