The Spanish government has designated €7.1 million from European Next-Gen funds to support recovery efforts in areas affected by the DANA disaster. The funding will primarily be used for projects focused on climate change adaptation. This will include early detection systems and modifications to rivers and other water flows to prevent future flooding.
The Spanish Ministry of Industry and Tourism, in collaboration with the Department of Innovation, Industry, Trade, and Tourism of the Valencian Community, has allocated these funds to various relief initiatives. The projects aim to mitigate the impact of climate change through the implementation of early warning systems and flood prevention measures.
Integration with European funds
The agreement also includes adjustments to previously planned initiatives funded by the European NextGen programme in the Valencia region. Moreover, these funds form part of Spain’s broader recovery, transformation, and resilience strategy.
Post-DANA relief actions
At the request of the Valencia Region, three new relief measures have been introduced, with a total investment of €7.1 million:
- €2.86 million will go towards preventive measures and the restoration of damaged infrastructure and public spaces.
- €2.145 million will be used to adapt roads, cycle paths, footpaths, rest areas, shelters, and recreational spaces.
- €2.1 million will support the improvement and restoration of urban environments affected by the storm.
Regional response and satisfaction
Marián Cano, Councillor for Innovation, Industry, Trade, and Tourism, welcomed the decision. She noted that discussions had been ongoing since November to ensure the allocation of European funds to affected regions.
“From the Generalitat, we have actively worked to redirect these funds to the areas seriously impacted by the DANA disaster,” Cano stated. She also expressed gratitude to the ministry for approving the Valencia Region’s request to modify the deployment of European funds.
“This funding is crucial for the full reconstruction of our region, especially in the hardest-hit areas,” she added.
The government’s financial support represents a significant step in recovery efforts. This will ensure that the affected areas receive necessary infrastructure improvements and climate resilience measures.
