The dream has finally come true. In 2031, the Ryder Cup will take place at Camiral Golf & Wellness in Catalonia, marking the world’s most prestigious tournament’s first visit to Spanish soil in its storied history. The official announcement is expected on 22 July in the United States.

After years of dedicated work, Camiral has secured its place as host for one of golf’s most iconic events. It is backed by broad institutional support, including the unwavering commitment of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation. Formerly known as PGA Catalunya, the resort will follow in the footsteps of Valderrama, which hosted the Ryder Cup in 1997 under the captaincy of Severiano Ballesteros. That was the first time ever the event was held outside the British islands.

Years of effort behind the bid

Bringing the Ryder Cup to Camiral didn’t happen overnight. The bid was driven by Camiral itself, with backing from local, regional and national bodies at different points along the way. It faced more than a few setbacks—most notably a funding gap from the Generalitat that pushed back the expected announcement from late 2024. In the end, additional private investment stepped in to cover the shortfall, clearing the path for the final deal to be signed.

Filling the final gap in the calendar

The Ryder Cup pits Europe against the United States every two years. The event draws tens of thousands of spectators and captivates millions more around the world. In recent years, the event’s future hosts had already been designated through 2033, with only the 2031 slot unconfirmed, until now. Camiral joins a prestigious list of golf venues that includes Bethpage Black (2025), Adare Manor (2027), Hazeltine (2029), and The Olympic Club (2033).

A unique event in world golf

First played in 1927, the Ryder Cup is a biennial men’s team competition between Europe and the United States. The cup is named after English businessman Samuel Ryder, who donated the trophy. Over the years the event has grown into one of the most eagerly anticipated tournaments in global sport. Unlike most major championships, it is contested purely for pride, there is no prize money, and the format is based on match play. Teams compete in foursomes, fourballs and signles matches across three days.

Since the inclusion of continental Europe in 1979, the rivalry has intensified. Meanwhile, Spain produced some of the Ryder Cup’s most iconic figures, from Seve Ballesteros to Jon Rahm.

This year, the Ryder Cup takes place from 23 to 28 September at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York.

Final details still under discussion

Although the hosting rights have been confirmed, not every aspect of the event has been finalised. Discussions are ongoing regarding the official name, with various stakeholders suggesting options that include Barcelona, Costa Brava, Catalonia, and Spain. The aim is to ensure international recognition without overcomplicating the branding.

A landmark moment for Catalan golf

Camiral’s selection is a milestone for golf in both Catalonia and Spain. Beyond the sporting spectacle, the tournament is expected to deliver long-term economic benefits. Furthermore, it strengthens the region’s position on the global golfing map.
