For pet owners in Spain, travelling with their furry companions can often be a logistical challenge. With limited transport options for animals, many have faced tough decisions between leaving their pets behind or foregoing trips altogether. However, Renfe has taken a significant step forward in making travel more inclusive for pet owners.

.

Spain’s national railway company has expanded its pet-friendly routes on the AVE high-speed train network in Catalonia. Passengers can now travel with dogs weighing up to 40 kilograms on an increased number of AVE routes.

In Spain, you can travel with your dog weighing up to 40 kilos on some AVE trains on the Madrid – Barcelona, Madrid – Malaga, Madrid – Alicante, Madrid – Valencia, Madrid – Zaragoza and Madrid – Granada lines. On the Madrid-Barcelona line, the direct and semi-direct AVE trains with a stop in Zaragoza will be added to another stop in Lleida Pirineus and Camp de Tarragona, and Girona and Figueres Vilafant will be incorporated as new pet-friendly destinations. Previously, this option was only available on direct and semi-direct trains connecting Barcelona and Madrid, with a stop in Zaragoza.

‘Large Pet Project’

This expansion reflects Renfe’s commitment to addressing the needs of families with pets. Since introducing the “Large Pet Project” in collaboration with Nestlé Purina in September 2022, Renfe has transported over 7,260 large dogs without carriers and nearly 400,000 smaller pets in carriers. The project aims to make pet travel more accessible while ensuring the comfort of both animals and passengers.

Guidelines for travelling with pets

Renfe’s pet travel policy prioritises the well-being of animals, their owners, and fellow passengers. Here are some key guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Large dogs: Each passenger is allowed to bring one large dog (up to 40 kg). A maximum of two large dogs per train is permitted. However, they must occupy a designated two-seat area in a specific carriage.
  • Small pets: Smaller pets (up to 10 kg) can travel in carriers without restrictions on the number of pets per train.
  • Booking requirements: Passengers travelling with pets must reserve their spot in advance to secure the appropriate seating arrangements.

These measures ensure a smooth journey for everyone on board, maintaining safety and comfort standards across the network.

Tips for stress-free pet travel

For those planning to take advantage of Renfe’s pet-friendly policies, preparation is key. To ensure a stress-free journey, start by acclimatising your pet to train sounds and environments to help them feel more comfortable. It’s also important to pack essentials such as water, food, and any comfort items like toys or blankets that might make the journey more enjoyable for your furry friend. Finally, adhering to Renfe’s guidelines will help avoid any last-minute issues and ensure a smooth travel experience for everyone involved.
