Record in Ourense: watermelon of more than 28 kilos

It’s been a long time coming. Samuel Cajide from Ribadavia planted a dozen watermelons of different varieties in May. Among them were seeds of the so-called “carolina cross”. A species that stands out for its size. Watermelons of around 20 kilos are regularly found. But a specimen of almost 30 kilos is very special.

Samuel Cajide, the producer of this huge watermelon, assures that it is an all-natural watermelon, which has grown so large without pesticides. The watermelon weighs no less than 28 kilos and 200 grams. And until the moment it was harvested, as it grew quietly, ignoring anything, it left friends, family, and passersby speechless.

Between the vineyards

Samuel has a piece of land for his own use. It is located in the Camporredondo, in the Ouren city of Ribadavia, an area where wine is made. Here, among the vineyards, grew what Samuel says is the heaviest watermelon in Galicia. The melon became so large because of the nutrients and properties of the soil, the richness of the ecosystem and the purity of the water and air.

Good soil

“This soil is good, it provides the necessary nutrients and is replenished with nitroxene, potassium and phosphorus,” he explains. Samuel expected some watermelons to reach 20 pounds, but they exceeded all expectations. The resident of Ourense points out that without climate change it could have been even greater, because the humidity and the sun do not help. That’s why he’s going to look for another plot next year where they can grow even better.

Chemical-free

It is an all-natural watermelon. “Without chemicals or pesticides,” Samuel confirms. “We added some of our own manure and necessary nutrients for the soil.” In this way, Samuel grows the rest of his products, all for his own consumption. He also has 7 acres of vineyards and a small winery, so he knows what he’s talking about.

What will next year bring?

With Samuel already thinking about next year’s production, he doesn’t rule out breaking the record. This time, he planted the seeds in May, a little later than his other colleagues. If he did it sooner, he could even gain a few pounds.
