PALMA – The initiators of a petition want a new name for the airport in Palma de Mallorca. Currently, the official name is Palma de Mallorca Airport. However, it is also known as Son Sant Joan.
On the Change.org petition portal, tennis fans Victor Bonnin y Sebastián Muntaner have now launched a campaign. Moreover, they want to rename Spain’s third-largest airport in Mallorca Rafael Nadal International Airport. The latest sporting milestone in Australia of Rafael Nadal was the inspiration of tennis enthusiasts. He won the Australian Open. With that the Mallorca-born and bred tennis player became the first male tennis player in the world to win 21 Grand Slams.
Through Change.org, fans have started collecting signatures: “Name Palma airport, Rafael Nadal International Airport“. The initiators will submit the signatures to the Government of the Balearic Islands, the Spanish Airport Authority AENA, and the Government of Spain.
“Rafael Nadal is the best tennis player in history and the greatest ambassador of Mallorca. He is the one who most deserves that Palma de Mallorca airport bears his name,” reads the petition. So far, the initiators have collected 2.500 signatures.
Muntaner writes: “I think that Rafa Nadal represents the values that should be an example for everyone: humility, honesty, education, sacrifice, tenacity, and effort. Furthermore, wherever he has gone, he has made our island, Mallorca, known. Therefore, I think that nothing would make us more excited than every time we pass through that place we can see his name”.
