October fatalities

In October 2024, Spain recorded the lowest number of road accident fatalities for the month since 2011. Despite a 1.5% increase in long-distance travel, the number of fatalities decreased, indicating some positive trends in road safety.

Here’s a breakdown of the latest data from the Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT).

Key figures for October 2024

In October 2024, 83 fatal accidents occurred, resulting in 88 fatalities. This is 12 fewer deaths than in October 2023. So far this year, 971 people have died on Spanish roads, which is 23 more than in the same period last year.

Motorcyclist fatalities decrease, pedestrian fatalities rise

October saw a decrease in motorcyclist fatalities, with 22 motorcyclists losing their lives, 13 fewer than last year. However, fatalities among other vulnerable road users were higher:

  • Pedestrians: 8 fatalities
  • Cyclists: 7 fatalities
  • Personal mobility vehicle users: 1 fatality

These figures highlight the need for increased awareness and safety measures for all road users.

Road type and accident type impact fatality rates

Most fatal accidents took place on conventional roads, where 72% of fatalities occurred. The DGT also noted a decline in fatalities from head-on collisions, with 15 deaths compared to 25 in October 2023. Rear-end and multiple-vehicle collisions also decreased, with 8 deaths compared to 13 last year.

Type of accident breakdown:
  • Head-on collisions: 15 fatalities (down from 25)
  • Rear-end/multiple-vehicle collisions: 8 fatalities (down from 13)
  • Road departures: 35 fatalities (similar to last year’s 34)

Seat belt non-usage remains a concern

Out of the 88 people who died in October traffic accidents, 12 were not using their seat belts. This includes 11 passengers in cars and one in a van, underscoring the ongoing issue of non-compliance with seat belt laws.

Regional variations in traffic accidents

Some regions achieved a significant reduction in road accidents. Andalucía, Castilla y León, and Galicia recorded the largest improvements in accident statistics this October. However, certain days saw higher fatality numbers:

  • Highest fatality days: Sunday, October 13, and Saturday, October 26, with 7 fatalities each
  • Safest day: Wednesday, October 2, with zero fatalities reported

All Saints’ Day holiday traffic

During the All Saints’ Day holiday period (from October 31 to November 3), there were 5 fatal accidents on Spanish roads, all on conventional roads involving cars. The accidents occurred in the following locations:

  • Alcudia (Baleares)
  • Dalías (Almería)
  • Sarria (Lugo)
  • Xinzo de Limia (Ourense)
  • Boecillo (Valladolid)

These incidents involved either road departures or collisions, reinforcing the need for extra caution during high-traffic holidays.

Year-to-date summary

As of the end of October 2024, a total of 971 people have lost their lives on Spanish roads, an increase of 23 fatalities compared to the same period last year. This increase indicates that while October showed promising improvements, road safety efforts must continue year-round.

Spain’s October traffic fatality rate is at a 13-year low, yet some challenges remain. Increased fatalities among pedestrians and cyclists and non-compliance with seat belt laws signal areas for further improvement. The DGT continues to urge road users to prioritise safety, especially on conventional roads and during high-traffic periods.
