Pamplona gas explosion

On Monday, 13 January, a gas explosion in the village of Noaín, near Pamplona, caused significant damage to a two-story apartment complex. Nine people were injured, including two in critical condition. Emergency services evacuated 250 residents, and the affected area remains cordoned off.

The explosion occurred at 6.02 pm and was attributed to a gas leak in the building. Firefighters swiftly extinguished the resulting blaze, while police established a safety zone to prevent further injuries.

Injuries and hospitalisation

The injured were transported to hospitals in the region. Among them, a 22-year-old man and a 13-year-old girl are in critical condition. The other seven victims sustained less severe injuries and are under observation. Additionally, two individuals sought treatment for anxiety and smoke inhalation at the local health centre and were discharged shortly after.

Mass evacuation of 250 residents

Approximately 250 people were evacuated from surrounding residences as a precaution. Many sought refuge with family and friends, while others were temporarily accommodated in regional hotels. Local authorities and emergency services facilitated the evacuation, providing temporary shelter at Noaín’s cultural centre.

Gas and electricity supplies to the area were cut off, and authorities have restricted access to the affected site. After the gas leak was repaired, residents were permitted to retrieve essential belongings, but the buildings remain uninhabitable for now.

Damage to Pamplona Planetarium

The gas explosion also caused damage to the Pamplona Planetarium. While the building was empty at the time, the fire affected its iconic dome and damaged the projection room. Fortunately, no injuries were reported at the Planetarium.

Ongoing investigation

The police and Guardia Civil are investigating the cause of the explosion. Consequently, efforts are underway to determine the exact circumstances of the gas leak. Local authorities are working to repair the damaged infrastructure and ensure safety.

Community response and support

Despite the severity of the incident, no fatalities occurred. Local residents expressed relief and gratitude for the swift response from emergency services. The mayor of Noaín praised the coordinated efforts of all involved and highlighted the importance of community solidarity during challenging times.

Ministerial visit and support

Amparo López, Spain’s Minister of the Interior for Navarra, visited the site to assess the damage and offer support. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, providing assistance to displaced residents and addressing the aftermath of the explosion.
