The Diputación de Alicante has approved a €400,000 grant for the construction of a second well in the Vall de Laguar. This will ensure water supply stability for Calp and Murla. This critical infrastructure project aims to address potential disruptions from the existing Lucifer well.

The new well, funded entirely by the Diputación de Alicante, will serve as a backup to the current Lucifer well. Located in the Vall de Laguar, this additional resource will provide essential redundancy to prevent interruptions in the water supply to Calp and Murla. The project comes as part of an extraordinary funding initiative for enhancing hydraulic infrastructure, published recently in the Boletín Oficial de la Provincia.

Vital infrastructure investment

According to Ana Sala, the mayor of Calp, the construction of this second well is a significant step forward. “This is excellent news,” Sala noted. “It allows us to expand resources and guarantee the supply of a basic service like potable water to Calp residents in case of any malfunction at the Lucifer well.” Importantly, the new well is not intended to extract additional water. Instead, it is to act as a safeguard, ensuring continued service even during technical issues.

Combating the challenges of drought

This initiative is particularly timely given the ongoing challenges posed by recurring droughts in the region. The water reserves of the province of Alicante are currently at the worrying level of only 21.55% of capacity. Only the region of Murcia and the provinces of Almeria and Albacete are struggling with even lower water reserves. Securing reliable water infrastructure is essential to maintaining the quality of life and supporting local economies in affected municipalities.

A fully funded solution

The Official Gazette of the Province (BOP) has published today the granting of this aid within the extraordinary call for subsidies for hydraulic infrastructures for high-water supply, capture, and regulation. The work will be carried out directly by the Alicante Provincial Council. Furthermore, the amount of €400,000 will cover the total cost of the work. Herewith, involved municipalities will not need to bear additional financial burdens.
