Bullfighter Morante de la Puebla spent the night in intensive care after suffering a very serious goring during the Feria de Abril in Seville, in an incident that has shocked the bullfighting world and overshadowed one of the city’s biggest spring events. El País reports that he remains in the UCI at the Viamed hospital in Seville after surgery for a grave wound involving a rectal perforation.
The injury happened at La Maestranza during the fourth bull of the afternoon. According to El País, the animal threw Morante to the ground and caused a deep wound in the anal area, with a trajectory of around 10 centimetres, partial damage to the anal sphincter and a 1.5 cm perforation of the rectum. The operation lasted more than two hours.
A dramatic turn in Seville
The afternoon had started very differently.
Morante had already cut one ear from his first bull and was once again at the centre of attention in Seville, where he remains one of the biggest attractions of the season. Cadena SER reported that the plaza was full again, with another “no hay billetes” crowd, before the corrida turned dramatically after the goring.
Cadena SER also reported that Borja Jiménez eventually left the bullring after a strong performance, but the day’s sporting result was eclipsed by concern over Morante’s condition.
Why the injury is being treated as so serious
The language used by doctors has left little doubt about the seriousness of the situation.
El País says surgeons described the evolution as uncertain, with infection risk one of the main concerns in the coming days because of the location and nature of the wound. The newspaper quotes surgeon Octavio Mulet as saying at least 10 days will be needed before doctors can better judge how the recovery is progressing.
That makes this more than a standard bullring injury update. It is a serious medical story with obvious implications for Morante’s immediate future and for the rest of the Seville season. That final point is an inference based on the reported severity of the wound and the uncertainty around recovery.
A major blow for the Feria de Abril
The timing could hardly be more dramatic for Seville.
Morante is one of the defining names of the current feria, and his appearance had been one of the most anticipated events of the programme. El País notes that he had recently returned to the ring in strong form, making the incident even more jarring for supporters who had arrived expecting another headline performance.
In a city where the Feria de Abril is as much a cultural spectacle as a sporting event, the goring has instantly become one of the dominant stories of the week.

Recovery and risk of infection
For now, the focus is entirely on Morante’s recovery.
Doctors will continue monitoring him in intensive care, with the coming days expected to be crucial because of the infection risk and the complexity of the injury. There is no clear timetable yet for what this means for his season, and at this stage, any return to the ring would be speculative. That is an inference from the current medical uncertainty reported by El País.
What is clear is that the Feria de Abril has been left with a very different story from the one many in Seville expected: not another triumphant night for one of Spain’s most recognisable toreros, but an anxious wait for news from the hospital.
