PALMA – The Greek islands are gaining ground as the favourite holiday destination for Germans compared to Mallorca. Where the Spanish island has long served as number one, it is now losing that position to the Greek Crete, according to TUI Germany.

Canary Islands

Nevertheless, the three Canary Islands of Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Tenerife do creep into the list of favourites of the Germans. TUI concludes that Germans cannot wait to travel again and, in the light of vaccination campaigns in Europe, are already planning and booking their vacations for this summer. That is why the travel organisation can already talk about the prevailing trends.

Bookings made so far by Germans with the travel agencies TUI and via the website show that Mallorca has lost its first position in favour of Crete. Although the difference is so small that with last-minute bookings Mallorca could still regain its first position.

Greek destinations

In the top five of the list for Germans are three Greek destinations: Crete, Rhodes and Kos. TUI attributes this high position of the Greek islands to the “low infection rates and consistent hygiene measures” that are being taken in Greece.

Presumably for the same reason the Canary Islands enjoy a lot of confidence from German holidaymakers. That is why Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Tenerife are also frequently booked by Germans with TUI.

Other trends that can be traced back to the Germans’ search for holidays are that people prefer to travel in the area and to flexible booking or cancellation conditions. Thus, the German Bavaria and the Austrian Tyrol also rise in rank among Germans.

According to TUI Germany, these are the 15 favourite destinations for Germans:

  1. Crete (Greece)
  2. Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain)
  3. Rhodes (Greece)
  4. Kos (Greece)
  5. Turquoise coast of Turkish Riviera
  6. Fuerteventura (Canary Islands, Spain)
