In a bid to curb illegal tourist rentals, the Consell de Mallorca has announced a significant increase in fines, raising the penalties to €80,000 per violation. This measure doubles the previous fine of €40,000.
The new fines will range from €40,000 to €400,000, with a standard penalty set at €80,000. This move aims to deter illegal rental activities and ensure legal operators are protected. José Marcial Rodríguez Díaz, the insular councillor for Tourism, emphasised the importance of combating unfair competition and maintaining the island’s livability.
New decree and administrative changes
A recently approved Decree of Administrative Simplification by the Government allows the Consell to include the cessation of illegal activities in all new fine procedures. Individuals have seven days to appeal the cessation order and fifteen days to contest the fine.
Legal consequences of illegal holiday rentals
If no satisfactory appeal is made within seven days, the Consell will forward the case to the Public Prosecutor for further action. These measures highlight the Consell de Mallorca’s commitment to regulating and protecting the island’s tourism sector from illegal practices.
