Stage 7 of the Gran Senda de Málaga (GR 249), stretching between Cómpeta and Canillas de Aceituno, has been recognised as the “Best Certified Hiking Path in Spain” for 2024. This accolade was awarded by the Spanish Mountaineering Federation (FEDME). It cemented the Axarquía region as a premier destination for hiking enthusiasts.

An Andalucian triumph

This 24-kilometre route, the only contender from Andalucia, surpassed three other nominees:

  • Hoz de Alarcón in Cuenca
  • Senda de los Riconchos in Cantabria
  • Ruta de los Menhires in Mataporquera, also in Cantabria

The jury assessed the trails on maintenance, signage, scenic value, and accessibility.

The path between Cómpeta and Canillas de Aceituno offers a mix of rugged landscapes, whitewashed villages, and striking natural features. The highlight is the 50-metre suspension bridge known as ‘El Saltillo,’ a major draw for hikers and adventure seekers.

The 2023 winner of this prestigious award was the Ruta de Pedra en Sec (GR 221) in Mallorca. Known for its dry-stone landscapes and Mediterranean vistas, it set a high bar for excellence in Spain’s hiking scene.

Celebrating Axarquía’s achievement

The recognition has been warmly welcomed by local communities, reflecting years of effort to position Axarquía as a top destination for active tourism. This award also shines a spotlight on the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara, and Alhama Natural Park. This is an area often overshadowed by the bustling Costa del Sol.

The park provides a haven for those seeking tranquillity and natural beauty. Beyond its scenic trails, Axarquía boasts culinary delights such as sweet wines and raisins, alongside a rich history influenced by its Moorish heritage.

Key highlights include ancient Roman and Moorish bridges and the dramatic El Saltillo gorge, where the suspension bridge offers a breathtaking perspective of the ravine. The trail follows a historic irrigation channel before concluding in the whitewashed village of Canillas de Aceituno.
