The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a yellow weather warning for 64 municipalities in the province of Alicante due to expected heavy rain. The warning covers the northern regions of El Comtat, Marina Alta, and Marina Baixa, where rainfall could exceed 100 litres per square metre over the next 24 hours.
Starting from midday on Tuesday, the skies over Alicante will become increasingly cloudy, and the rain is expected to continue until Wednesday. The downpour, brought on by a Mediterranean low-pressure system, may result in intense rainfall, with Aemet forecasting up to 30 millimetres of rain in one hour and as much as 60 millimetres over 12 hours. In some areas, rainfall could be even heavier, with Meteored predicting that certain parts of northern Alicante could surpass 100 litres per square metre.
Weather conditions and risk levels
Despite the yellow alert, which indicates a “low risk,” the rainfall is expected to be strong and sustained, posing a potential threat to affected municipalities. The warning is set to remain in place throughout Tuesday and Wednesday, though intense showers may continue into the remainder of the week, as additional weather fronts from the Atlantic are expected to arrive by Friday.
Aemet has indicated that this period of instability will extend into the final days of October, with the possibility of a “Dana” (an isolated high-altitude depression), which could lead to further declines in temperature and additional rainfall.
