Last week, a fisherman from Port de la Selva on the Costa Brava made an unusual catch – a seven-metre-long basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) found itself entangled in his nets.

The shark, unable to escape, was eventually brought back to the harbour. Sadly, it was dead upon arrival.

Why the basking shark is worth protecting

This particular catch is significant not only because of the shark’s size but also due to its status as an endangered species listed in Catalonia’s catalogue of threatened animals. The basking shark, which is the Mediterranean’s largest fish and the second largest in the world, feeds on plankton and small fish by filtering them through its open mouth. This adult female weighed between 4,000 and 6,000 kilograms and had a remarkable one-metre-wide snout.

The circumstances of the catch

According to reports, the shark became trapped in the fisherman’s net by accident. As the animal struggled to free itself, it became more entangled, ultimately leading to its death. While the outcome was unfortunate, the incident has provided valuable opportunities for scientific research. Furthermore, it is helping to increase understanding of this endangered species.

Collaborative efforts in the aftermath

The recovery of the shark was followed by a swift response from authorities. Experts from the Fundació Cram, a foundation dedicated to animal conservation, conducted biometric tests and collected samples for further research. They examined the shark’s size, weight, and fin structure, with plans for genetic analysis and studies on electromagnetic sensitivity.

This case highlights the importance of collaboration between various parties to protect endangered species. The efforts of Forestal Catalana, Agents Rurals, the Confraria de Port de la Selva, and the Nautical Club were key to the operation’s success. The quick thinking of the fisherman, who followed all necessary protocols, ensured that the specimen was transported safely to port, despite the unfortunate outcome.

Enhancing protections for endangered species

This incident underscores the need for ongoing conservation work to protect vulnerable species like the basking shark. Thanks to coordinated efforts and scientific research, there is hope for a better understanding of the species and the steps needed to preserve its future.
