Earthquake measuring 4.2 off the coast of Morocco felt in Málaga

Málaga was shocked by an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale in the early morning. The shock occurred at 2.40 am (Spanish time) south of Alborán, near the coast of Melilla.

The Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) (national geographical institute) has confirmed this. The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 19 kilometres.

Earthquake felt in southern Spanish coastal municipalities

The quake was felt in several coastal municipalities of the provinces of Málaga and Granada. In the province of Málaga, the tremors were felt in places such as Torrox, Vélez-Málaga, Algarrobo, Torre del Mar, La Cala del Moral and Torremolinos. The quake was also felt in the provinces of Granada, in cities such as Motril and Almuñécar, and even in the autonomous city of Melilla.

The initial quake was followed by a series of aftershocks. According to the IGN, about ten aftershocks were recorded, with magnitudes ranging between 1.6 and 2.9. To date, there have been no reports of damage or injuries. Although earthquakes are not uncommon in this region, IGN recommends being prepared for seismic activity. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation and will issue warnings if necessary.
