Renewing the National Identity Document (DNI) in Spain has long been a frustrating process, marked by lengthy waiting times and bureaucratic hurdles. Appointments could take weeks to arrange, often leading to further delays due to long waiting lists. However, the introduction of the DNI Express aims to change this by simplifying the renewal process through advanced technology.

The DNI Express has been implemented in select police stations across Spain. Its main advantage is that it eliminates the need for a ‘cita previa’ (appointment), which previously could take weeks to secure. By doing away with this requirement, the new system significantly reduces waiting times. Additionally, the need to bring a recent photograph is also removed, as the system now captures fingerprints and photographs on-site during the renewal process.

How does DNI Express work?

The DNI Express operates using the Multiple Expedition Module (ME), which features a double cabin design. This setup allows one official to serve two clients simultaneously, ensuring efficiency while maintaining client privacy. The advanced technology integrated into this system also supports contactless payment methods, making the entire process quicker and more convenient.

Requirements for using DNI Express

To use the DNI Express system, certain conditions must be met:

  • The existing DNI must be in good condition so that the system can read it accurately.
  • Personal details must be unchanged since the last renewal.
  • The DNI can only be renewed within 180 days of its expiration date.

Addressing long waiting times

Previously, obtaining an appointment for DNI renewal could take anywhere from 40 to 60 days, depending on the region. For example, residents in the Basque Country faced waits of approximately 46 days, while those in Valencia and Catalunya waited around 44 days. The limited availability of appointments created significant delays. By eliminating the need for appointments, the DNI Express effectively tackles this issue.

Improvement with digital administration

The DNI Express is a significant improvement in Spain’s public administration system. By leveraging technology to simplify the process, it not only saves time but also enhances user experience. This innovation reflects a broader trend towards digitalisation in public services, aiming to make bureaucratic procedures more efficient and user-friendly.
