narrowest road N-621

Spain’s vast road network stretches over 160,000 kilometres, weaving through mountains, valleys, and coastlines. Many of these roads are part of the national network. However, others fall under the responsibility of municipalities and regional authorities. Among these, one road stands out not just for its scenic beauty, but for its remarkable—and sometimes daunting—narrowness.

Nestled between Cistierna in León and Unquera in Cantabria, the N-621 road is often hailed as the narrowest road in Spain. It carves its way through the stunning Desfiladero de la Hermida, one of the longest gorges in Spain. The road’s narrowness is striking, with some sections seemingly wedged between towering stone walls, making it feel as though you’re squeezing through nature itself.

At certain points, drivers are warned about the constant risk of rock falls, as the gorge’s steep walls loom overhead. Despite these challenges, the N-621 offers a breathtaking drive that is worth experiencing at least once in a lifetime. The road leads travellers from the heart of the Spanish plateau to the beautiful Cantabrian coast, offering awe-inspiring views along the way.

Beauty and risk: The thrill of the N-625

In terms of beauty, the N-625, which connects Cistierna to Arriondas in Asturias, is another road that could give the N-621 a run for its money. Like its counterpart, the N-625 winds through a dramatic gorge—this time, the Desfiladero de los Beyos. The road runs parallel to the picturesque Sella River, making the journey through the heart of the Picos de Europa even more captivating.

However, the N-625’s winding path is not for the faint-hearted, particularly for passengers who tend to get carsick. This challenging drive, with sharp bends and narrow stretches, is as thrilling as it is beautiful.

The narrowest of them all?

Debates often arise over whether the N-621 or the N-625 holds the title of Spain’s narrowest road. In some sections, the minimum road width regulations are impossible to meet due to the natural landscape, but both routes offer an unforgettable driving experience through some of Spain’s most dramatic scenery.
