The Spanish Traffic Authority (DGT) will intensify alcohol and drug checks on roads across the country from Monday, 16 December. This campaign, running until 22 December, aims to reduce drink and drug driving during the festive season.

The timing coincides with a period of increased social gatherings, including Christmas parties and company dinners, where alcohol consumption often rises. Checks will be random and can take place on any road, at any time.

Collaboration with local police

To maximise coverage, the DGT has invited local police forces to join the operation. This collaboration focuses on monitoring high-risk areas and minimising potential dangers on the roads. By working together, authorities aim to enhance road safety during one of the busiest periods of the year.

Concerning statistics

Data from previous campaigns underscore the ongoing problem. During similar checks in recent years, between 300 and 400 drivers were found to be over the legal limit for alcohol or under the influence of drugs.

So far in 2024, 1,093 people have died in road accidents on interurban roads in Spain. These figures highlight the urgent need to tackle impaired driving and prevent further fatalities.

Raising awareness

In addition to enforcement, the campaign seeks to educate drivers about the risks associated with driving under the influence. Information materials and media campaigns will encourage motorists to consider alternatives, such as taking a taxi or designating a sober driver, often referred to as a “BOB” in Spain.

By combining awareness efforts with enforcement, the DGT hopes to ensure safer roads this Christmas.
