Copa del Rey 2020/21 Semi-final Draw

FOOTBALL: The draw for the semi-final of the Copa del Ray takes place today (Friday, 5th February 2021) at 1 pm in the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) headquarters, Las Rozas.  The draw will be conducted live from the Luis Aragonés room and screened via YouTube on the RFEF channel. 

The teams that will fight for a place in the final are Athletic Club, FC Barcelona, Levante UD, and Sevilla FC.  And to decide which teams will play against each other will be done by a simple blind “picking of balls”.

Fixture dates

The semi-final teams will play each other twice. The first leg matches will be played on 10th February with the return leg on 3rd March. 

Copa del Rey Qualifiers

The Copa del Rey 2020/21 began in November with over 100 teams battling for progression in this esteemed tournament.  Of the four remaining teams, Sevilla was the first to win their place in the semi-finals.  Barcelona had an intense battle in their last game against Granada going into extra time before they won 3-5.  Athletic won their game on penalties. And a fantastic goal in the 121st minute by Roger Marti saw Levante defeat Villarreal 1-0.

The history

This is the first time in over 100 years that Levante has reached this stage of the Copa del Rey.  Never in the club´s history has Levanted lifted the title.  However, the other teams, have won the trophy a total of 58 times between them.   Barcelona winning most often at 30 times, Athletic 23, and Sevilla on 5 ocassions).

The Copa del Rey first began in 1903.  As the oldest Spanish football competition, it is also considered to be one of the most prestigious in the world.   Winners of the Copa del Rey, will automatically qualifiy for the UEFA Europa League the following season.  If the winning club has already qualified via their league position, then the place is given to the highest-placed team not yet qualified.
