Spain’s football federation has announced new dates for all 24 Copa del Rey matches postponed on Wednesday following the devastating train collision in Toledo. Nine fixtures will now take place on Thursday, 29 October, with the remaining matches rearranged for dates in November. The decision allows the first round of the competition to continue while acknowledging the national tragedy that prompted the original postponements.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) suspended Wednesday’s scheduled first-round fixtures as a mark of respect and solidarity with those affected by the railway disaster near Urda, in the province of Toledo. The announcement came on a day when football clubs, supporters and organisations across Spain were responding to the scale of the tragedy. The federation has since published a revised fixture list, confirming that the postponed matches will be played between 29 October and 13 November.
Nine postponed matches to be played on Thursday
The quickest rearrangements involve nine fixtures that will now be played on Thursday evening, adding to the matches already scheduled for that day. Among them are Numancia against Real Oviedo, Cieza against Granada and Xerez against Cádiz, while Mijas Las Lagunas will host Real Jaén in an Andalucía derby. Kick-off times for the rescheduled matches range from 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm, with all times given in mainland Spain.
Thursday’s additional fixtures mean a particularly busy evening for the competition, as clubs attempt to complete their first-round commitments without creating further disruption to domestic schedules. The RFEF’s decision also means supporters planning to attend affected matches will need to check their clubs’ updated ticketing and travel information.
Remaining matches moved into November
The other 15 postponed fixtures have been allocated dates between 3 and 13 November, with the rearrangements spread across seven matchdays in total. Several clubs from Spain’s top two divisions will therefore have to accommodate their cup commitments alongside existing league schedules.
Among the later fixtures, Valencia will travel to Tavernes de la Valldigna on 10 November, Real Betis will visit Navalcarnero on 12 November and Celta Vigo will face Salamanca CF UDS on 13 November. These matches are among the latest to be played in the rearranged first-round programme, according to the federation’s official announcement.

What happens to the Copa del Rey after the postponements?
The rearrangements affect the opening round rather than the overall structure of the tournament. The first round consists of 56 single-match ties, with lower-division clubs generally hosting opponents from higher divisions. Eighteen matches were played on Tuesday before Wednesday’s programme was suspended, while another 14 fixtures were originally scheduled for Thursday.
The competition’s second round is currently scheduled for 1–3 December, leaving time for the postponed fixtures to be completed before the next stage. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid and Real Sociedad are exempt from the opening round because of their participation in the Spanish Super Cup.
For supporters whose matches have been rearranged, the most reliable information about admission arrangements and any ticket changes will come from the clubs themselves. The federation’s revised schedule confirms the match dates and kick-off times, but does not provide a universal policy for tickets or refunds.
Spain’s football authorities have also postponed nine Copa de España futsal matches originally scheduled for Wednesday, together with the next-round draw, as part of the wider response to the tragedy.
