New Carrefour 65+ card

A new Carrefour discount scheme is turning heads among Spain’s seniors: fresh produce without VAT for over-65s. With its newly launched Tarjeta 65+, the supermarket chain offers VAT-free shopping on a wide range of fresh produce.

The move is part of Carrefour’s broader strategy to strengthen customer loyalty, particularly among senior shoppers. The French retailer joins a growing list of supermarkets using discounts and targeted benefits to stay competitive in Spain’s crowded grocery market.

VAT-free shopping for seniors

Holders of the ‘Tarjeta 65+‘ will no longer pay VAT on fresh products such as meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, eggs, cheese, charcuterie, bakery items, cooked dishes, and delicatessen goods.

This benefit applies to all Carrefour formats, including Carrefour, Carrefour Market, and Carrefour Express stores. The accumulated VAT savings will appear as a discount via the ‘ChequeAhorro’, issued approximately every two months.

How to get the 65+ card

To be eligible for the 65+ card, customers must meet two criteria:

  1. Be at least 65 years old
  2. Be a member of the Club Carrefour

Those already enrolled in the club can visit any Carrefour store and request the 65+ card at the Customer Service desk. A valid ID is required to confirm age, and applicants must complete a short form on-site. Once processed, the benefits apply immediately.

Customers who are not yet club members must first join the Club Carrefour before applying for the 65+ card.

At checkout, shoppers simply present both cards. The total VAT for eligible items is calculated and added to their next ChequeAhorro for use on future purchases.

Youth card also available

In addition to the 65+ card, Carrefour offers a similar <30 Youth Card. This version targets customers under the age of 30 and also offers VAT savings, though in fewer categories. Young cardholders receive VAT discounts only on meat, fish, cooked meals, and charcuterie.

Both schemes reflect Carrefour’s effort to tailor its benefits to key customer groups and offer real savings in an era of rising food prices.
