a favourite beach for British tourists

Spain continues to be a favourite destination for European tourists seeking a perfect vacation. The country’s Mediterranean, Cantabrian, and Atlantic coastlines, coupled with long sunny days and delicious cuisine, make it a top choice for holidaymakers.

British tourists, in particular, are fond of the Mediterranean climate and frequently choose Spain for their holidays.

The Guardian’s reader picks

British media often recommends various Spanish destinations, and now the readers of The Guardian have shared their own recommendations for the European beaches that have impressed them the most. Alongside a beach in North Macedonia, the stunning shell beach in Lagos (Portugal), Meia Praia, and the cliffs of Porto Katsiki in Lefkada (Greece), the British have selected two beaches in Spain.

Cala Galdana, Menorca

The first recommended beach is Cala Galdana in Menorca. To reach this scenic spot, visitors must take the Me-22 road from Ferreries. At the end of the road lies a breathtaking horseshoe-shaped bay surrounded by pine trees. Cala Galdana offers facilities such as restrooms, a café, and water sports amenities.

One reader remarked, “If I could be teleported to any beach on my day off, this is where I’d go.” The nearby wilder beaches of Mitjana and Cala Macarella also received praise for their natural beauty.

Costa Barcelona

The second beach recommendation is along the Costa Barcelona. Accessible via the R1 train from Barcelona, each stop from Montgat Nord to Malgrat de Mar features a beach that is removed from the city’s hustle and bustle. Round-trip tickets can cost less than €10. Another reader shared, “I lived in Barcelona and swear by it; the stations are directly on the beaches, and you can reach five or six within an hour from the city.”

Other European beach recommendations

In addition to the Spanish beaches, readers also recommended the white sandy Plage Campiotel on Île de Ré, France; Kouremenos, one of the easternmost beaches in Crete; and Santa Maria del Focallo in Sicily, located just over an hour’s drive from Catania.

Spain’s allure for European tourists remains strong, and these reader recommendations from The Guardian highlight some of the best beach destinations in the country. Whether seeking a bustling beach scene or a tranquil seaside escape, Spain’s diverse coastline has something for everyone.
