ODA DE BARÀ – An employee of the beach cleaning service found the lifeless body of a toddler on the sand of the beach of Roda de Berà (Tarragona) on Tuesday. The boy is between two and three years old, confirmed the municipality of the city of Tarragona
The body was in an advanced state of decomposition. Local police received the report early on Tuesday morning. Police units of the municipality, Mossos d’Esquadra and the Guardia Civil immediately arrived on the scene. Only the legs and spine of the child were found on the beach of Costa Dorada.
According to Mayor Pere Virgili of Roda de Berà, “the child’s body may be a migrant,” he stated. The mayor suspects that the child comes from the Lampedusa region and referred to the ‘Mare Mortum’ or the deadly route between North Africa and Europe (Malta, southern Italy) where migrants die every year during their dangerous crossing.
Second body to wash up on the Costa Dorada
This is not the only body that has washed up on the Tarragona coast in recent days. Last week, the body of a woman was found in an advanced state of decomposition on the beach of Miravet.
The Guardia Civil is investigating the case and trying to find out the identity of the toddler.
