AEMET says Spain is heading for calmer weather, but not before wind, showers and rough seas

AEMET Spain weather outlook

After a blustery spell in parts of Spain, the outlook is turning quieter — but not quite yet. AEMET says stable weather should dominate much of mainland Spain over the next few days, although the far north can still expect weak, persistent rain. The Pyrenees may see snow from around 1,200 to 1,400 metres, and Storm Erminio will continue to bring showers to the Balearics, with a lower chance of rain in Catalonia.

The biggest short-term concern remains the wind. AEMET says northerly winds will continue across much of the mainland and the Balearics, with very strong gusts expected in wide areas of the northeast, as well as in Mallorca and Menorca. In the Canary Islands, conditions are expected to stay mostly stable, although calima is forecast on Wednesday before easing on Thursday as the trade winds return.

The unsettled patch should ease from Friday

The better news for travellers and anyone hoping for a calmer start to April is that AEMET expects stability to strengthen from Friday, 3 April. Rain in the far north and the Balearics should fade, snowfall in the Pyrenees should stop, and the strongest gusts in the northeast and Menorca are expected to ease.

Temperatures are also set to move upwards. AEMET says maximum temperatures will rise more generally from Friday, although there could still be frost in higher parts of the northern half of the country and in mountain areas of the southeast.

Weekend outlook points to a warmer spell

Looking further ahead, AEMET’s forecast for Saturday 4 to Monday 6 April points to a more settled pattern across most of mainland Spain and the Balearics, with high pressure dominating and only the far northwest at risk of weak rain from inactive fronts. Elsewhere, skies are expected to stay largely clear.

That more stable setup should bring a more noticeable rise in temperatures, especially daytime highs. AEMET says 25 °C could be exceeded in broad areas of the southwest, while frost should become limited to high parts of the Pyrenees. Winds are expected to be generally light inland, with breezier conditions near the coasts and sea breezes becoming more common.

What this means in practice

For now, the split is quite clear. The next day or two still bring a more uncomfortable mix for parts of the northeast, the Balearics and the Pyrenees, with wind, showers and some snow still in the picture. But by the weekend, much of Spain looks set to swing back towards a calmer and warmer pattern that will feel far more spring-like.

For readers planning travel, outdoor events or the Semana Santa run-in, the message is simple: the rougher conditions are not over yet, especially in exposed coastal and northeastern areas, but AEMET expects a much more settled spell to take hold as the week goes on.
