Castellón flooding

Castellón is under a red alert today as the DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) brings severe weather to the region, with the potential for torrential rainfall reaching up to 180 litres per square metre in under 12 hours.

The extreme weather alert, issued by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), warns residents of the high likelihood of significant flooding across both inland and coastal northern areas of the province. The public is urged to avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas. Authorities are emphasising safety around rivers and flood-prone locations.

Severe rainfall and rising flood risks

Early Thursday, towns like Sant Mateu, Catí, and Vallibona reported rainfall accumulations surpassing 150 litres per square metre, highlighting the severity of the storm. AEMET anticipates that the heavy rainfall will continue through the day. The peak will be during the morning hours and the risk of severe flooding and property damage in susceptible areas is real. Alongside the rain, Castellón could experience strong winds and potential hail, adding to the adverse conditions. The red alert has been extended to include parts of northeastern Teruel and southern Tarragona. This is expanding the impacted area and increasing concerns over sudden floods and landslides.

Caution and preparedness for affected communities

Authorities are advising residents to stay off the roads in high-risk zones and to take extra precautions around rivers and flood zones. The DANA has already left extensive damage and almost 100 victims across multiple regions in Spain, especially in Valencia, and Castellón is now at the centre of the current weather emergency. Rainfall is expected to ease by the afternoon. However, there remains a chance of further intense thunderstorms, potentially adding up to 150 litres of rainfall in some areas.

Residents are encouraged to follow real-time updates from AEMET, check local authorities and prepare for possible evacuations if conditions worsen. The warning emphasises that, with the unpredictable nature of this storm system, residents should remain vigilant to ensure safety.
