A British fugitive featured on the UK’s Most Wanted campaign has been arrested in Madrid after allegedly spending years evading justice while living under a false identity in Spain. The 37-year-old, identified only by the initials J.R., is wanted by the British authorities in connection with a series of alleged sexual offences committed over ten years.
Spain’s National Police arrested the suspect on 1 August following a lengthy investigation carried out in close cooperation with the UK authorities. He was the subject of an International Arrest Warrant issued in February this year for extradition to face trial in the United Kingdom.
According to the Policía Nacional, the investigation began in 2024 after British police informed their Spanish counterparts that a British national wanted for several alleged sexual assaults could be hiding in Spain. The offences under investigation are alleged to have taken place between 2012 and 2022 and involve several women, including at least one who was in a relationship with the suspect at the time.
Investigation stretched from Benidorm to Madrid
Officers from the National Police’s Family and Women’s Care Unit (UFAM Central) initially traced the suspect to the Benidorm area, where investigators carried out surveillance and enquiries over several months.
Police said the investigation proved particularly challenging because the suspect was leading an itinerant lifestyle and had taken extensive measures to conceal both his whereabouts and his true identity. Detectives monitored locations he was known to frequent, identified people believed to have assisted him and gradually built a clearer picture of his movements.
The search intensified after Spain’s Ministry of the Interior joined the UK’s Most Wanted Fugitives campaign earlier this year, working alongside the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and the independent charity CrimeStoppers to publicise fugitives believed to be hiding overseas.
Arrest made after surveillance operation
Investigators eventually received information suggesting the suspect had travelled to Madrid. On 1 August, officers established a surveillance operation in a central area of the capital where they located a man matching the description of the wanted fugitive.
Police said he was wearing a cap and glasses in an apparent attempt to disguise his appearance. He was arrested without incident but allegedly refused to cooperate with officers during the identification process, carrying no identity documents and providing several different personal details.
Officers were nevertheless able to establish his identity by comparing visible tattoos with information already held during the investigation before confirming the match through fingerprint analysis.
Extradition proceedings now begin
Following his arrest, the suspect was brought before Spain’s Central Court of Instruction in Madrid, where extradition proceedings are expected to begin.
Under Spanish law, an International Arrest Warrant allows the courts to determine whether the legal requirements for extradition have been met before a suspect is transferred to the requesting country. The court will consider the documentation provided by the UK authorities before making a decision.
The allegations remain under investigation in the United Kingdom, and the suspect has not been convicted of the offences.

The UK’s Most Wanted campaign is coordinated by the National Crime Agency and CrimeStoppers, working with international partners to locate suspects wanted for serious offences. Spain has long been one of the key countries involved because of the large number of British residents and visitors, with cooperation between the two countries regularly leading to arrests and extraditions.
Police have not released the suspect’s full identity, referring to him only by his initials, J.R., in line with the official press statement. However, the details released by Spanish police closely match the public Most Wanted appeal for John Rocks, a 37-year-old British man wanted by Police Scotland for alleged sexual offences committed between 2012 and 2022 and known to have links to Benidorm. However, neither the Policía Nacional nor the UK authorities had publicly confirmed at the time of publication that Rocks was the man arrested in Madrid.
